2. ALL CAPS is not acceptable etiquette, folks
Updated June 28, 2024, 11:49 a.m. | By Jacaranda FM
IT IS NOT OKAY TO SEND MESSAGES LIKE THIS...
If you are wondering why there is such an absurd day like International Caps Lock Day, we are here to shed some light on the topic.
We have all been exposed to social media, specifically instant messaging, so much so that it is integrated into our daily lives.
We would think that everyone knew the unspoken rules of social engagement. Unfortunately, they don't.
"Software developer Derek Arnold created the original day to poke fun at 'typographical conventions'. But it became the day we provoke Internet friends and colleagues and raise awareness that writing in all caps is not proper etiquette." ()
If you are questioning why using all caps is inappropriate, then you should remember this day. If you have to ask, then you are probably one of the people who uses it.
Typing in all caps is like shouting at someone. DON'T YOU SEE?
"He wanted to remind us that upper case letters look like shouting, which is not nice. Because the recipients of our communications can’t gauge our volume or see our facial expression or body language, they can easily interpret our caps as ANGER, which is also not considered nice." (National Today)
So, in short, using caps lock to type out any message is improper etiquette. Unless you are trying to convey anger, in which case it is proper, right?

6. A Guide on Avoiding Job Scams in South Africa
In today's challenging job market, scammers are taking advantage of desperate job seekers. Job scams are a growing concern in South Africa, as desperate job seekers often fall prey to fraudulent schemes promising employment. Understanding the most common types of job scams, how to spot them, and how to avoid them can help protect job seekers from becoming victims.
Common Job Scams in South Africa
Fake Job Listings
Scammers post fake job ads on popular job portals, social media, or via email, enticing job seekers with attractive offers. These listings often require personal information or upfront fees for "processing."
Payment for Job Placement
Job seekers are asked to pay for guaranteed job placements or training programs. Legitimate employers do not require payment for job applications or placement.
Identity Theft Scams
Scammers pose as potential employers and request personal information such as ID numbers, bank details, and other sensitive information under the guise of processing job applications.
Advance Fee Scams
Job seekers are promised high-paying jobs but are asked to pay an advance fee for application processing, visas, or other administrative costs.
Upfront Payment Scams: Fraudsters ask for money to secure a job, process applications, or provide training.
Phishing Emails: Emails claiming to be from reputable companies asking for personal information.
Most Common Scams People Fall For
1. Upfront Payment Scams: Many fall for these due to desperation and the promise of a guaranteed job.
2. High Salary with Minimal Qualifications: Offers of high-paying jobs requiring little to no experience or qualifications often attract desperate job seekers, leading them to overlook red flags.
3. Unsolicited Job Offers: Job seekers receive unsolicited emails or messages offering jobs they did not apply for, prompting them to provide personal information or pay fees.
How to Avoid Job Scams
Research the Company
Verify the legitimacy of the company by checking its official website, contact details, and online reviews. Contact the company directly to confirm the job listing.
Never Pay for a Job
Legitimate employers do not charge application or placement fees. If asked to pay for a job, it is likely a scam.
Be Cautious of Unsolicited Offers
Treat unsolicited job offers with suspicion, especially if they require personal information or upfront payment.
Check for Red Flags
Poor grammar, vague job descriptions, and unrealistic salary offers are common signs of job scams. Genuine job offers are detailed and professionally written.
Protect Personal Information
Do not share personal information such as your ID number, bank details, or passwords with potential employers until you have verified their legitimacy.1. Research the company thoroughly.
How to Spot Job Scams
1. Poor grammar and spelling in job postings or communications.
2. Pressure to act quickly or provide personal information.
3. Vague job descriptions or company information.
4. Use of personal email addresses instead of company domains.
5. Requests for payment or financial information.
Reporting Job Scams
If you encounter a job scam, report it to:
1. The South African Police Service (SAPS)
2. Metro Law Enforcement
3. The website or platform where you found the job listing
4. Your bank: If you have provided financial information, notify your bank immediately to protect your accounts.
Job scams can be financially and emotionally devastating, but by staying vigilant and informed, you can protect yourself from falling victim. Always remember: you never pay for work. Legitimate employers will not ask for payment during the job application process. Stay cautious, do your research, and report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.
Remember: Legitimate employers will never ask you to pay for a job opportunity. If you're asked to pay, it's likely a scam.
